7 Engaging Ways to Train Staff
HR departments are working harder than ever before to ensure a smooth onboarding process. Once that’s achieved, the hard work continues as they need to keep staff up to date, fully trained for their roles. The world’s top companies realise the importance of this – it’s no coincidence that their human resource development training methods are far from ordinary.
With the freelance workforce growing and recruiters always looking to place people in new roles, HR teams are under pressure to deliver a thriving environment for their staff as it’s easy for them to explore new options if they don’t feel like a company is giving them opportunities to learn and grow.
Shawn Achor’s best-selling book, The Happiness Advantage, revealed that we're far more effective learners when we’re happy, so it’s no surprise that ‘typical’ training methods are rarely used at top companies – as they are hard to be enthusiastic about.
- Training days are expensive, difficult to organise, and staff members may not be thrilled that they may need to travel for training.
- Training manuals are typically long-winded and dull, making them an ineffective way of learning.
Thanks to technology and companies placing more emphasis on inclusivity, human resource development training methods have moved on from training courses and manuals. There are better ways for staff to learn.
7 modern human resource development training methods
1. E-learning
Companies find using their own intranet makes more sense for their human resource development training. As the vast majority of people use computers more than books these days, it feels more natural for staff to learn via their own computers or mobile devices.
Updating resources on your intranet are quick and easy for your technical team to update, and you’ll no longer need to keep a cupboard filled with training manuals that are always at risk of becoming redundant very fast.
2. Role-playing
Role-playing is an effective method used for human resource development training methods as they are hard to ignore. Not all employees will want to take part (but we guarantee some will). Role plays allow you to reenact the important lessons to be taught, bringing staff together to learn swiftly in a fun manner.
3. Outdoor training
It’s common for companies to round everyone together in an office to play a few videos and run through some training. The problem? Staff may not be fully switched on as they’ve been sitting in the same building all day. Taking the training outdoors to a nearby park is an easy and cost-effective way to reinvigorate staff, getting them in the right headspace to learn.
4. Research & development
Many tech companies set time aside for research and development. This usually involves breaking up the company into groups for a set amount of time each month where they get to work on an internal project.
Placing members of staff on specific projects – that they aren’t particularly confident in – is the key, as it forces them to get out of their comfort zones to learn new skill sets.
5. Simulators & AI
Some companies, with big budgets to spend, are turning to simulators and AI to train their staff. Aeroplane pilots have been using simulators for years but more companies are starting to use simulation software to help train their staff.
Watch out for simulation-based training providers coming your way – they are on the rise.
6. Coaching/Mentoring
Rather than looking for outside help, the knowledge that new/junior staff need is likely to be already known by those inside your company. Setting up a program for senior staff to train junior staff can be a rapid way of developing their skill sets.
Not only that, it will boost team morale as team members will get to work closely with other members of staff that they may not have met before.
7. Job rotation
Does your company come unglued when certain members of staff are away? If so, starting a job rotation program is a great way to give other members of staff the important skills that your company needs more of.
